The following is a list of restaurants where you can sample some of the local flavors Charleston has to offer while searching for your new home in the area. The lowcountry is famous for its cuisine. If you are from out of town you must be sure to try Charleston's signature dishes like shrimp and gritz, or she-crab soup.
- Charleston Grill- 843-577-4522- This restaurant is located in the Charleston Place Hotel, which is one of the nicest hotels in Charleston. Their London style black cabs can be seen throughout the city. They offer local cuisine, and private parties can be arranged
- Hanks Seafood Restaurant- 843-723-3474- Hanks is decorated in a 1940's style fish house. There is a large local crowd here because the seafood is amazing.
- Circa 1886- 843-853-7828-This restaurant is located in the carriage house of the Wentworth Mansion. It is an excellent menu. After dinner you can go up to the tower of the Wentworth mansion and get an amazing view of historic Charleston.
- Middleton Place Restaurant- 843-556-6020- Middleton Place has the oldest gardens in America. The menu includes vegetables grown on the plantation! If you make reservations past 5:30pm you can take a tour of the gardens.
- Anson's-843-577-0551-Downtown Charleston. The downstairs area is a more casual setting, while the second floor is quite formal. The service is excellent.
- Old Village Post House- The Post House in Mount Pleasant's Old Village is a great place to have a meal. The old village is one of the most attractive and charming neighborhoods in Charleston. It is a great place to have a meal.
- Meritage- 843-723-8181- This is a tapas style restaurant with a great menu.
- Taco Boy- This is a Folly Beach restaurant with a laid back atmosphere and a great menu. You can spend the day at the beach and then finish the day here with a great meal.
- Poe's- This is a great place to go for a drink and a burger after the beach on Sullivan's Island. The outdoor setting is great.
- Andolini's Pizza- This is a huge pizza for people who really love pizza.
- Hominy Grill- 843-937-0930- The Hominy grill has one of the best breakfasts in downtown Charleston. It is definitely worth checking out.
- Fig- Fig has a really unique atmosphere with local artists' work on the walls. It is a great place to have a meal or a drink

Charleston Activities
There are always a lot of fun activities to go to and watch or get involved in while living in Charleston.
- Visit Cypress Gardens to see a wide variety of shrubs, trees, plants, and flowers in large manicured gardens.
- Magnolia Plantation, Middleton Place, and Boone Hall Plantation are all great places to visit. They make one feel like they are stepping back in time. Middleton boasts the oldest manicured gardens in America. Boone Plantation in Mt. Pleasant has several festivals such as the LowCountry Oyster Roast.
- Visit Kiawah Island and go for a bike ride on the shady paths that go around the circumference of the island. The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island has great food, a fitness center, and a five star spa facility. Freshfields market in the roundabout between kiawah and Seabrook Islands has botiques, art stores, sporting goods, and food. Kiawah Island is home to both a half and full marathon.
- Charter a fishing boat trip fro Bohicket Marina or Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant. The Charleston waters are home to a variety of different fishing options, and it is a great way to see the area from a different point of view.
- Visit Folly Beach just past James Island to watch surfers at The Washout. Folly Beach is home to several surfing contests and often has great waves. If you go the north end of Folly one can see Morris Island Light House.
- Four times a year there are art walks in downtown Charleston. One can take a tour of local art galleries and have wine samplings along the way.
- Charleston Has a variety of parks including Palmetto Park in Mt. Pleasant which has scenic walks and a great dog park. James Island county park has a water park, dog park, camping, a climbing wall, and various festivals throughout the year. Sunrise Park on James Island has incredible views of The Penninsula. Francis Marion National Forest in Mt. Pleasant has an enormous amount of protected wilderness area with trails, camping areas, and places to explore. These are all great places to go with a dog because you can take dogs off the leash and let them get some exercise. My yellow labrador Major and I frequent all of these places.
- One can take a horse drawn carriage through downtown Charleston to learn about the history and hidden secrets that the city holds. It is a great way to get a feel for the downtown area. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the city. The Preservation society of Charleston and the Historic Society of Charleston also host candlelite tours of both homes and garden in the downtown Charleston area. This offers residents and visitors a glimpse into what life was like in historic Charleston in the past. It is interesting to see how the modern world is integrated into the preserved homes.
- The Terrace Theatre on James Island is the only independent film theatre in Charleston. They offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages during the film. This is a great place to relax and take in a movie.
- The comedy improv group, The Have Not's performs downtown every wednesday. I have been to one of their shows and it was very well done. Entrance is five dollars and they call it laughs for a lincoln.
- Saturday mornings there is a farmers market in Marion Square in downtown Charleston. There is artwork, flowers, local produce, and crepes to enjoy.
- Historic Fort Sumpter is located off the coast of the downtown Charleston penninsula. It is where the first shots of the civil war were fired. Guided tours are available that leave from a dock right next to the South Carolina aquarium. It is a short boat ride, and it is definantely worth seeing.
- The South Eastern Wildlife Expo is an annual event that all animal lovers will enjoy. People come from all over the nation to see the wildlife exhibits. Highlights include falcon demonstrations and dog jumping contests. Dogs run down a platform and leap into an above ground pool! Some of the dogs can jump amazing distances.
- Spend the day on Sullivans Island and have lunch at Poe's. They have great hamburgers. If there is wind that day you can walk out onto the beach and watch the kiteboarders glide along the ocean. It is an amazing site to see. The houses and architecture at Sullivan's Island will definantely make an impression.
- Charleston Race Week is a large sailing regatta every April. Charleston is a great destination for sailors and power boaters alike.

Charleston Sports
- Charleston is home to several sports teams including the Charleston Stingrays, a ECHL hockey team. The Charleston River Dogs, a minor leage baseball team associated with the NY Yankees, and the Charleston Battery pro soccer team.
- The prestegious Ocean Course on Kiawah Island has played host to numerous golf events including The Senior PGA Championship, the World Cup of Golf, and the Ryder Cup.
- If tennis is what interests you, each sping Charleston holds the Family Cup Circle tennis tournament. It is the longest running womens Tier 1 event. Charleston has a large population of tennis players and many places to play.
- There are also a wide array of college sports events at The College of Charleston, Charleston Southern University, and at The Citadel.
